It is located in the city of Larissa, which is the capital and largest city of the Thessaly region in Greece. In our school, there are about 230 students at the age of 6-12 years old. Our school staff consists of thirteen general education teachers, three foreign language teachers, two Physica Education teachers, one Art teacher, one Drama teacher and an ICT teacher. Apart from the core subjects (Greek Language, Maths etc.) students are also taught English, French, Drama, Art, Music, Physical Education and ICT.
Our school aims at encouraging the development of a set of shared values, such as respect, tolerance, fairness, compassion, appreciation of cultural diversity and love of their traditions. It also aims at heightening student awareness and engagement in social, environmental and intercultural activities through opportunities within and outside the school programme.
Our main goal is to provide students with all the necessary knowledge and skills for their future life, for their personal growth, well-being and active participation in a democratic society, contributing to sustainable development and embracing themselves a sustainable lifestyle. We also aim to create a safer and friendlier environment for the practice of human rights and values, more conducive to real and effective learning. Our school is looking forward to increasing participation in both national and international projects which can contribute to enhance our students’ awareness of different cultural realities, as well as reinforce their linguistic and informal skills. Furthermore, the school cultivates a strong sense of European awareness for the entire school community: pupils, teachers, and parents. Our aim isto foster an idea of a common Europe for all citizens, primarily in the areas of culture and humanitarianism.
To achieve the above-mentioned goals, 16th Dimotiko Larissas implements various innovative actions and has participated in various European programmes in collaboration with other schools abroad. More specifically, our students are experienced in working on cross-curricular collaborative projects with students from other Greek schools and/or other countries, such as cross-curricular eTwinning projects or Erasmus+ projects. Our school is also involved in many extra- curricular activities such as environmental, cultural and health education programmes. Through all these activities students learn to work collaboratively and communicate with students from other countries, they are given the chance to escape the school boundaries and travel to new places, meet people of the same age and learn things about their culture. All members of the school staff are skilled and experienced teachers and they have participated in several training seminars, professional development opportunities and courses held by the Ministry of Education, the Institute of Education Policy, Environmental Centres and various other organisations, in order to improve their teaching practice and implement innovative methods in the classroom. All members of the school staff have been also trained in the use of digital tools in the teaching practice.
