A Memorable Day: Rome’s High School “Liceo Giordano Bruno”’s Class 5AL for Urban Sustainability

On February 15th, the students of 5AL class from the Liceo Giordano Bruno participated in the creation of a smog-eating mural. The mural is located at the square of the Rebibbia metro in Rome, curated by the Urban Artist Luogo Comune, together with young volunteers and students.

The day has been part of a series of events linked with the „M’illumino di meno” campaign – promoted since 2005 by the Caterpillar broadcast of Radio 2 – and ended on February 16 with the National Day of Energy Saving and Sustainable Lifestyles, recently established by the Italian Parliament.

The initiative is a concrete response and at the same time a tangible action to reiterate the need to stop the climate crisis, the main intent of the young participants in the initiative. The mural represents, in fact, a female figure that frees, through a megaphone, an ocean of molecules that, in the artist’s intentions, represent the future of energy, free from dependence on fossil fuels.

The images are juxtaposed with words chosen by the Giordano Bruno High School students and the Livorno Art School aligned with the themes that are at the center of the 2023 „M’illumino di meno” edition .

With the smog-eating paint used you are able to eliminate the pollution of about 24 petrol cars.

This information is tangible for the young people for the understanding that a change of course is possible through concrete actions that we can all carry out with small actions. The painting of the mural and the cleaning of the areas in front of the station have allowed, in addition to the upgrading of an urban area, a greater awareness on energy saving on green topic.

For the occasion, the students of our high school have prepared a manifesto as evidence of their personal contribution to an active and aware citizenship, along with other numerous activities carried out  in the school in favour of sustainability declined in various forms that involve the entire school community, students, families and teachers, such as the Erasmus Choice project  which sees our Institute at the forefront of the fight against climate change.
